Flashback: The Conquering Heroine

 TITLE: The Conquering Heroine

SYNOPSIS: Oberon takes his 13 yahren old daughter Phoenix on her first hunt.

She saw the transport coming from a mile away. Literally since it was flying and the vehicle’s onboard sensors had tripped the proximity alarm the woman had set up.

Aradia looked up from her gardening, trowel in one gloved hand and a bunch of weeds in the other, and smiled. Her husband had taken their only child on a camping trip to do some hunting and it would be the girl’s first hunt. The woman smiled and brushed aside a stray lock of dark auburn hair laced with silver and shielded her eyes against the glare of the sun. She watched as the dot on the horizon grew until she could see the details of the craft and eventually the occupants.

One of them was waving.

She waved back.

Mentally she checked her list of things to do. Yes, a meal had been prepared and was slowly cooing in the food prep area. Yes a pitcher of sweetened citrus juice was chilling nicely in the freezer unit. Yes, fresh towels had been hung in the bathrooms with full knowledge that neither one of her family members would have had much acquaintance with water in the two sectons that they had been gone.

“Lords, please let there be fish on the menu as well,” she said aloud.

The only creature within hearing range was the family catlet who lay not too far away curled up in one of the patio lounge chairs napping.

“You lazy little bag of bones,” the woman scolded. “Can’t you even wake up long enough to welcome your mistress home?”

The only indication the woman received was an ear twitch, but other than that the feline didn’t move.

The woman sighed and shook her head. Felines! A daggit would have been barking and dancing around all excited at her feet, eager to welcome the family home. The tail would have been wagging the daggit as the old saying went.

* 1948: The Fifth Fleet engages the Cylons at the Battle of Molecay. Pegasus is the only Colonial vessel to survive. Commander Cain, realizing that the Cylons were doubtless lying in wait along the entire route back to the Colonies, orders Pegasus out into deep space towards the Krillian Star System and Gamoray which is in the heart of the Delphian Empire.[17]

1950

The destruction of the Colonies, thirty years before Galactica discovers Earth.[18][19]

The episodes and events of the Original Series are set during this period.
1951 - 1979

The period between Battlestar Galactica (TOS) and Galactica 1980.

The Cylons, over this 30 year period, develop completely new technologies and evolve considerably - "beyond the wildest fears" of the Colonials, according to Dr. Zee. These new technologies include improved Cylon Raiders and the creation of humanoid Cylons.[20]

Also, during this period, the Imperious Leader is apparently replaced, as his voice is considerably different by 1980.[21]

Sometime prior to 1970, Captain Apollo dies.[22]

* 1951: Dillon is born in space aboard a vessel in the Colonial Fleet. [23]

* 1953: Jamie Hamilton is born in the United States on Earth. [24]

* 1960: The last attack by the Cylons on the Colonial fleet until 1980. [25]

* 1970: Starbuck is stranded on a desolate planetoid, where he rebuilds the Centurion named Cyrus (nicknamed "Cy" by Starbuck). Some time later at this same location, Dr. Zee is born to the mysterious woman, Angela. [26]

After 1970

Dr. Zee's ship catches up to the Fleet. [27].

Lt. Boomer is promoted to Colonel.[28]

Commander Adama grows a beard.[29]

Boxey begins to go by the name "Troy" as he grows older.[30]

1977

Dr. Donald Mortinson begins work on his nuclear degeneration formula.[31]

1980

Galactica's long range probes arrive in the Solar System. They positively identify the third planet as Earth.

Galactica and the Colonial Fleet reach Earth. Adama is now over 130 yahrens old. Troy is 37.

Galactica 1980 episodes "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I" through "Part III"

Troy, Dillon and Jamie head back in time to the American Revolution to find Xavier. [32] The team is apparently successful in stopping Xavier, as there are no apparent changes to Earth's history.[33] Xavier escapes being brought into custody, however, and remains in Earth's past. While there, he perfects a process of cellular transformation which can allow him to assume the appearance of others. [34]

Jamie returns to Earth, and back to the job she was offered with the United Broadcasting Corporation. [35]

In light of the unknown aircraft violating U.S. airspace, which are in reality Colonial Vipers, the United States Air Force dedicates new funds to the tracking of U.F.O.s.

Dr. Zee leads a project to build a new saucer-shaped fighter craft, designed to thwart the Cylons.[36]

The Cylons determine to test some of their new technologies on the Colonial refugees. They plan to first attack the freighter Delphi, a straggling vessel in the Colonial Fleet, which happens to function as the Fleet' school.[37]

Galactica 1980 episodes "The Super Scouts, Part I" and "Part II"

Troy and Dillon spend a few days away from the children on an unknown mission.[38]

Having spent an inordinate amount of money investigating the Super Scouts, Colonel Sydell's budget is questioned by his superiors in the United States Air Force.[39]

Xavier returns to the present time from Earth's past, and assumes the form of Lt. Nash of Galactica. [40]

Galactica 1980 episode "Spaceball."

Xavier remains at large on Earth, without a Viper, stranded in the present and on the ground.

In another test of their new technologies, the Cylons send out new, advanced fighters, manned by Centurions and humanoid Cylons, to search for the elusive Colonial fleet.[41]

October 31 - November 1, 1980

Galactica 1980 episode "The Night the Cylons Landed, Part I" [42]

Galactica 1980 episode "The Night the Cylons Landed, Part II"[43]

Late 1980

The Imperious Leader and his three base ships, catch up to Galactica and the Fleet, but the location of Earth remains elusive. [44]

Galactica 1980 episode "Space Croppers".

Galactica maintains its first colony on Earth, and the Super Scouts remain there, relocating from the baseball camp where they had been staying.

Galactica 1980 episode "The Return of Starbuck".

The scripted but only partially shot episode "The Day They Kidnapped Cleopatra" would have taken place here.

1981

Events that take place after Galactica 1980

In the 1980 continuity, the series ends in the middle of the story with Adama in command of Galactica, and Dr. Zee finally aware of his origin.

Xavier remains at large on the Earth, apparently having given up his attempts to alter Earth's past.

The Cylon Empire has still not discovered Earth, but they have been able to locate the fleet twice, and two Cylons who accidentally crashed on Earth were narrowly stopped from revealing its location. In other words, the Cylons are about to discover Earth.

The Galacticans are continuing their policy of gradually introducing technological change to Earth.

The planned but never filmed Starbuck episode "The Wheel of Fire" would have taken place at this time.

1990

In Dr. Zee's projection of what could have happened in the future, environmental damage and population expansion has rendered Paradise Valley polluted and crowded. If Dr. Zee's warning was in fact heeded by the people of Paradise Valley, however, these events may not have come to pass.[45]

Notes

The crux of this timeline is the claim that the series is set 30 years after the events of the Original Series. This was done in large part to explain the cast changes, and is chiefly supported on screen by the aging of Troy, who was a child in the first series. However, the 30 year date only appeared in promotional material and in interviews, and was not seen on screen. Alternative suppositions, where there was a much shorter gap, would help explain the paradox of the lunar landing depicted in "Hand of God" and the apparent youth of some of the characters.

References

1. ↑ BCE stands for "Before the Common Era," an updated variation of the older term "B.C." (Before Christ)

2. ↑ Adama refers to the Beings of Light as the "mother race" in "War of the Gods".

3. ↑ At the beginning of "Saga of a Star World", it is mentioned that the peace conference is being held at the beginning of the 7th millennium of human history, which would mean human history was just crossing into its 6,000th year. 6,000 years prior to "Saga of a Star World", which is noted later in this timeline as happening in 1950, would be circa 4,000 BCE.

4. ↑ A partially filmed, but never aired episode of Galactica 1980, entitled "The Day They Kidnapped Cleopatra" was partially set in 30 BCE. The announcement of the cancellation of the series by ABC came during the filming, and the episode was never completed. This episode would have brought back the time travel plot device used in the first episode. Additionally, Egyptian themes were used frequently in Battlestar Galactica, such as the city of Eden in "Lost Planet of the Gods".

5. ↑ Ancient space travel is characterized in the classic episode "The Hand of God".

6. ↑ The Thousand Yahren War begins 1,000 years before "Saga of a Star World" which, as noted later in this timeline, is set around 1950.

7. ↑ A 500 year old celestial chamber is depicted in "The Hand of God".

8. ↑ The trip to 1776 is mentioned in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part III" but not shown on screen. Xavier's plans are mentioned at the start of "Spaceball".

9. ↑ Adama reveals he is over a hundred yahrens old in "Lost Planet of the Gods".

10. ↑ Based on the age of Dirk Benedict during the filming of the Original Series. Starbuck is revealed to be from Caprica, as well as Chameleon being his father in "The Man With Nine Lives".

11. ↑ Jamie Hamilton makes a slight error when she tells the Galacticans that "20 years later, in 1939, World War II broke out" in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I". However, she was reciting this from memory, so it's an understandable error.

12. ↑ As confirmed by Jamie Hamilton in her conversation to the Galacticans in Zee's chamber (Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II).

13. ↑ This calculation is based on Noah Hathaway's age during the filming of the Original Series. This would make Boxey seven years old in "Saga of a Star World" and 37 years of age in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I" -- which happened to be the age of Kent McCord when he played the role.

14. ↑ Described in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II".

15. ↑ 15.0 15.1 Depicted in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part II" and "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part III".

16. ↑ Project Blue Book is mentioned in a disclaimer at the end of every Galactica 1980 episode. Colonel Sydell's new organization within the US Air Force in the series has a similar mandate, and the disclaimer was apparently put in place to assure viewers that Sydell's organization was fictitious, and not to be confused with the real project that had concluded years before.

17. ↑ Two yahrens prior to the events of "The Living Legend, Part I".

18. ↑ Officially, Galactica 1980 was set 30 years after the events of the Original Series. This piece of information is never specifically mentioned on screen, but was mentioned in promotional advertising and noted in background material for the program.

19. ↑
www.tv.com/galactica-1980/show/1252/summary.html

20. ↑ The increased technological prowess of the Cylons is described in "The Super Scouts, Part I" and "The Night the Cylons Landed, Part I".

21. ↑ When the Imperious Leader is shown in "Space Croppers", he is no longer voiced by Patrick Macnee, but instead by Dennis Haysbert.

22. ↑ Troy refers to Apollo's death in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I". This apparently happens before the events depicted in "The Return of Starbuck" as Starbuck does not mention Apollo when relating to Boomer people he wishes to say goodbye to. In addition, Apollo's death is apparently a mystery to the Fleet, or so the script for "The Wheel of Fire" indicates.

23. ↑ Based on the age of Barry Van Dyke at the time of filming.

24. ↑ Based on the age of actress Robyn Douglass at the time of filming, who portrayed Jamie Hamilton. She identifies herself as an American in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part III".

25. ↑ There has not been a Cylon attack in almost a generation prior to "The Super Scouts, Part I". A generation is typically denoted as 20 years.

26. ↑ Events of the flashback sequence of "The Return of Starbuck". Dr. Zee is a pre-teen child, who appears to be roughly ten years of age. Reasoning backward, he was born c. 1970.

27. ↑ The voyage of Dr. Zee's ship is shown in "The Return of Starbuck"

28. ↑ By the time of "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I" Boomer has assumed this rank.

29. ↑ Adama has a large Moses like beard throughout 1980, with the exception of the flashback scenes in "The Return of Starbuck".

30. ↑ Troy mentions this in "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I", although Adama still refers to him as thus in a private conversation before being shown the invisibility field.

31. ↑ According to Dorothy Carlyle, Dr. Mortinson had been working on nuclear degeneration for three years as of "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I".

32. ↑ Troy, Dillon and Jamie are about to head off on this mission at the end of "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part III"

33. ↑ No reference to Xavier having achieved his goals is made in the subsequent episodes.

34. ↑ Xavier's activities are related in "Spaceball".

35. ↑ As of "The Super Scouts, Part I", Jamie is back at work at UBC.

36. ↑ The saucer project is revealed in "The Super Scouts, Part II" and shown again in "Space Croppers".

37. ↑ Just prior to "The Super Scouts, Part I"

38. ↑ Briefly mentioned in "[Spaceball]]".

39. ↑ Just prior to "Spaceball"

40. ↑ Just prior to "Spaceball"

41. ↑ Just prior to "The Night the Cylons Landed, Part I"

42. ↑ "The Night the Cylons Landed" is specifically noted to occur on Halloween.

43. ↑ Episode ends in the early hours of November 1.

44. ↑ Just prior to "Space Croppers"

45. ↑ Possible future revealed in "The Super Scouts, Part II".

The Trouble With Wants and Needs

(NOTE: This is unfinished and needs major editing. I was attacked by my plotbunnies during my lunch break at work today and they were vicious little beasts until I got it all out of my head and into the computer. I just don’t have time to edit it at the moment. Maybe after NaNoWriMo is over.)

Apollo, Starbuck and Boomer on a turbiolift talking about Triad. There is another couple there, but they leave. As the doors are about to close a graceful and seductive female hand floats through the opening, halting the door’s closure and forcing it to open once more. At the wrist of this lovely hand is tied a strip of red fluttering material. As the door opens a beautiful blond haired woman of average height is revealed and as she glides into the lift as if dancing on air her gaze flits quickly about taking in the three warriors. Smiling, she stops and twirls gently one hundred and eighty degrees to stand facing the closing door.

“Good evening gentlemen, “she purrs. Mischief twinkles in her sky blue eyes.

Three pair of appreciative eyes look her up and down. The dark skinned man is the first to speak.

“You’re looking exceptionally lovely this evening, Cassiopeia.”

Her head tilted coyly in his direction and she gave him a warm smile and the briefest of nods.

“Thank you, Boomer. You’re looking quite handsome yourself, Going out tonight?”

“I’m taking Johanna and her Eletsen out to dinner on the Rising Star. What do you and Starbuck have planned?”

“Oh,” she managed a coy reply laced with a sigh. “we’re not going out tonight. Starbuck has that Pyramid Tournament he signed up for. If I remember correctly, tonight is the grand finale’.”

“There’s a very good chance I’ll win, too.”

Starbuck was hoping to steer the conversation away from the fact that he was standing up his girl for this event. They could go out tomorrow night after all. What’s the big deal?

“Correct me if I’m wrong Cassiopeia, but isn’t today your Natal Day?”

The words hit Starbuck like a punch in the gut. Frack! Was that today? He hadn’t even gotten her a Natal Day gift he’d been so wrapped up for the past secton in this gambling tournament.

“Yes it is, Boomer. How thoughtful of you to remember.”

“Well Happy Natal Day. If you’re not going out with Starbuck then is it okay to ask what you are doing tonight?”

The lift was nearing the next stop and slowed.

She didn’t have to go far to summon up pleasure for her next words.

“oh I don’t mind telling you, Lieutenant. I am going out to dinner with the most handsome and eligible bachelor on board the Galactica.”

The lift doors hissed open and she turned to Apollo who had remained quiet since the woman’s entrance. “Shall we?”

Now was Apollo’s micron to shine. He offered her his elbow in a most gentlemanly fashion and smiled.

“It’s my pleasure.”

Her smile was infectious and he returned it with a twinkle in his own forest green eyes.

Starbuck’s jaw dropped, but the words stuck in his throat. The pair walked off the lift before he found his voice.

“Hey! Wait a centon!”

He stepped forward, but the lift doors were already closing and cut him off. His shocked  hesitation had cost him precious microns and the lift moved once more.

“Bad move, buddy!”

“ Boomer… I…”

The lack man shook his head.

“You… are pathetic, pal.”

In the corridor the woman’s gate changed and she sighed, shoulders slumping just a little. By all outward appearances nothing had changed in her appearance, but it translated through her close physical contact with the Captain.

“He didn’t mean to mess up his events like this. You know his memory’s better than that.”

Sighing, she stopped them in the middle of the corridor and turned to face her escort.

“Is it, Apollo? I mean, really? This is the second time in as many months he’s forgotten something so important to the both of us. Last month it was the anniversary of our first real date. When we started gong steady. This time…”

All the happiness drained from the woman’s face and her gaze was downcast. She couldn’t look up an show him the moisture that was gathering in her eyes.

“I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. I know what kind of a man Starbuck is. I think I know him better than he knows himself. Still…”

She shrugged, blinked, then looked Apollo in the eyes. “I know what he is. How he is. I just can’t seem to help myself.”

“Are you sure you want to do this? Sheba and I…”

“No! No, really! I’m fine.”

She took a deep breath and a half-smile worked its way onto her face once more as she squared her shoulders. Turning, she initiated the walk this time.

“I’m more than happy to watch Boxey for you while you and Sheba have a night out. Lords knows you two get so little time together off duty as it is. Besides, like I told Boomer, I planned on going to dinner with the most handsome and eligible bachelor on this ship and I intend to do just that!”

“I’m sure Muffett will miss you two. “

Cassiopeia giggled. “No Daggett’s allowed in the Grand Dining Hall of the Rising Star. Sire Uri’s such a stickler for rules.”

It was Apollo’s turn to sigh. “I’d love to be able to tell Sire Uri where he can stick his rules.”

A heartbeat later he added...

“Father won’t let me.”

There was genuine regret laced with the barest hint of venom in his tone.

“Oh I’m sure everyone in the fleet would love to tell Sire Uri where he could stick one thing or another.”

“Cassiopea!”

“With all due respect of course.”

“Of course,” the Captain echoed.

Yea. Neither one of the bought that load of feldergarb.

They paused outside the closed door to the family quarters Apollo shared with his son.

“I’d see you in, but Sheba’s waiting for me in the bay and the shuttle to the Agro Ship leave in five centons. I’ll see you later, and thank you again.”

“My pleasure. Have fun.”

She watched the Captain hurry down the corridor before turning to the closed door to ring the chime.

Let that hotshot playboy stew over this for a while. Many yahrens ago her own father had once accused her of wanting far too much. Was this the way her life was going to go? Always wanting that which she couldn’t have? Since the betrayal and meeting Starbuck she had re-prioritized her life. Her wants and desires. For some strange reason the image of a sandy haired, smart mouth, egotistical fly-boy always seemed to rise to the top of her decreasingly short list of wants and needs.

The door opened and she entered, hoping that she wouldn’t turn around one day to find that even that one thing on her want list had disappeared.

Adventures of the Star Kobol: Betrayal

Commander Eyjan hurried down the corridor intent on learning why the battle klaxons had sounded when they were so close to their rendezvous with the rest of the fleet for the signing of the armistice with the Cylons.

There were many aboard the Sagittaran Battlestar STAR KOBOL who could never believe that the Cylons would accept that which was so strange and alien to them. Peace was a concept that they could not understand because they had never known what it was, and they were not programmed to contemplate such matters. They existed only to serve the Empire.

Eyjan’s aid, who was bent over the command console, caught sight of him out of the corner of her eye as he ascended the steps of the command dais.

“Colonel, what’s going on?” There was a hint of annoyance to his usual deeply toned bark.

The young woman pointed to the scanner.

“Cylons and a tanker, sir. It looks like they’re refueling.”

She stood fully upright and spoke in a softer voice so as not to be heard by the most of the personnel on the bridge.

“Adama was right. There’s not going to be any peace. Those tankers are refueling for an attack. I’m sure if it.”

“I agree, Commander.”

The corroborating voice came from Flight Officer Cerberus, the lead launch officer seated at the command console. Eyjan turned as the man continued.

“The Cylons wouldn’t be here unless they planned to double-cross us from the beginning.”

Eyjan frowned. All these sectons he had hoped and prayed that the Cylons were as fed up with war as his people were. Apparently ythat was not so.

“Launch all vipers to intercept and destroy,” he ordered. “If there’s not gong to be peace I don’t want to waste time here when the Fleet could be in trouble.”

“Commander!” the communications officer called. “Message coming in on Fleet Com-Line Alpha from the ASTROZON.” The youth cocked his head as he listened to the rest of the transmission. He worked to get a visual but none was available. “Commander Aristotle reports that the fleet is under attack by waves of Cylon Raiders. It seems that only two battlestars were able to launch their vipers. The ASTROZON and… one other.”

“What about the others?”

“Unknown. President Adar ordered the two ships nopt tp launch their fighters. Apparentl;y the commanders thought it best to violate orders and try to protect the flee.”

Phoenix looked to Eyjan as of hoping he had the answers to set everything right again. He saw the lost look on her face and shook his head. There was nothing they could do to help the fleet now. Even if they went to maximum speed at that centon they wouldn’t arrive in time to save the fleet.

“Prepair to make the jumpo to light speed,” Eyjan ordered. “The least we can do it try to save them. Phoenix, recall all vipers. I think they’ve done enough damage fro now.

As preparations were being made, the commander walked to the gigantic observation port just in time to see the tanker disappear in a brilliant flash of light. He hoped they weren;t too late to save at least some of the fleet.

Phoenix, from where she strood behind the flight officer, scrutinized her commander. His 6’1” ebony stature made him just 12.7 centimeters taller than herself. Thought he was 58 he didn’t look his age, rather, he was content to allow people to think he was much  younger. His late wife, may the Lords of Kobol rest her soul, accused him many times of having lied to her about his age. Most men of his yahrens would have let their physical appearance lag considerably, but not Eyjan. Once in a while he would forget, but he woujld snap to and return to his schedule of dailt callestendics when he had noticed a slight tightnes sin his uniform, which Phoenix would occassionially chide him about. She would come to regret those words later because he woujl come knocking on her door at 0530 in the morning to get her out of bed to go jogging with him. His excuse was that he didn’t want to exercise alone. Phoenix hated jogging.

“Adar,” the black man muttered. “What have you and your council of fools done to us?”

Over the old Moon Cimtar, the ATLANTIA erupted in a ball of flames. Starbuck cursed out Adama as the GALACTICA pulled out of formation and retreated at the same time the STAR KOBOL’s commander gave the order to ‘jump’. Its course: Linus Sector. Within a centar at maximum speed Cimtar was within scanning range, but the 6th Fleet was nowhere to be found. An aura of despair hung over the bridge crew as scanners picked up traces of debris.

“Scan for survivors,” Eyjan ordered.

He didn’t believe there were any until alight on Cerberus’ control panel lit up – a red, blinking light that indicated an organic life form that was still alive. If that life form were dead a blue light would blink.

“Human?” Phoenix asked, leaning over the officer’s shoulder. The man put the warbook readout on the screen.

“One man fighter… one occupant… Human, Colonel.”

“Dispatch a shuttle and have a medic standing by when they bring out guest on board,” the Colonel said.

“Yes, maam.”

“I hear the lieutenant’s condition has stabilized,” Eyjan said to the female pilot standing before his desk.

“Yes sir,” Azriel replied.

Captain Azriel, commanding officer of Blue Squadron, was a tall, slender Tauran woman with sun bleached blonde hair and pale blue eyes. She had joined the academy on Sagittara when her oldest brother, Cornell, was killed in the battle of Debran. Her younger brother was c

currently assigned to the Battlestar GALACTICA’s Red Squadron.

The door buzzer sounded and Colonel Phoenix entered.

“Just the report, Captain, and I’ll read it later,” Eyjan said.

Azriel saluted and left.

“Eyjan, what is it?” Phoenix asked.

He commander held up the wounded pilot’s battlejacket for her inspection. She immediately recognized the insignia.

“He’s from the GALACTICA?” she asked.

Eyjan nodded.

“Order helm to set course for the colonies, sublight speed. There may be other pilots out there. If there are we’ll pick them up.”

“Shall we set course form home or the outermost planets, sir?”

“We’ll head home, Colonel,” the man replied, deep in thought.

Now if only the STAR KOBOL could get there in time to stop the Cylons from destroying the last traces of humanity. Sagittara could hold it’s own for a while. Hopefully until help arrived.

The vid-screen came to life when the young woman touched a button and she relayed the orders to the helm officer. The commander motioned her to a chair when she had finished.

“Would you care for a drink?” he offered.

“Please.”

He poured the sweet, yellow colored Sagittaran wine called Laharrhani into two glasses and handed one to the Colonel. The man tasted his own as would an oenophile.

“Ahh. My favororite.”

“What’s the real reason you called me down here?” the young woman asked.

“Phoenix, I think it’s time you knew something very important about this so-called armistice,” the black man started, resuming his seat. “We weren’t intending on making peace with the Cylons.”

“Someone should have told the Council.”

“Five yahrens ago the head of the Galactic War Committee, Supreme Admiral Thorbin, ordered a special Battlestar to be built – a battledreadnaught called the LORDS OF KOBOL. It was to be the most powerful weapon in history. It was completed six months ago. Under he command of Commander Sigma it set out two months ago away from the Colonies on an important mission. One that would ensure our victory in this war. The LORDS OF KOBOL was to come in from behind Cylon while the armistice was going on and launch an attack against the capitol city while their foces were elsewhere which should have been accomplished long before now. Supreme Armiral Thorbin ordered the Complete annhaiation of the planet.”

“What happened to the dreadnaught? Where is it?” Phoenix asked.

“From what my cousin, Reed, Thorbin’s secretary, told me the dreadnaught is ten times larger than out largest Battlestar, and I don’t know what happened to it. I do know that it can be picked up visually before it is ever picked up on sensors.”

“Ten times larger than the GALACTICA? That’s unbelievable.”

“What’s even more unbelievable is that it has three landing bays and slightly larher fighter ships, but I guess if you’re going up against Cylon itself you’d need something massive enough to do it.”

“Isn’t there anything that can destroy it?” the woman asked, raising the glass to her lips.

There’s only one thing – the Cylon’s Supertop Warship. It is said to be even larger than the LORDS. Actually there is no proof this this Supertop even exists.” Eyjan picked up a recording crystal from his desktop. “Everything I know about the LORDS OF KOBOL is on this tape. It’s not much, but it’s all I have at this time. If you wish to view it, it’s here.”

Phoenix nodded.

On the long trip back to the Colonies the STAR KOBOL picked up a handful of pilots who had not been able to make it to the nearest refueling station. In each case the rescued pilots recounted the same story for Commander Eyjan – that the fleet had been attacked by Cylon forces and, when faced with defeat, the Battlestar GALACTICA pulled out leaving her ships to defend the fleet.

Images floated before him then faded away, only to reappear and dissolve, each time forming different patterns. Yet one image seemed to reappear time and again. He was in his ship watching the lasers streak towards him. Then, from a distance, he saw his ship disintegrate. Images of a battle, a voice – Apollo’s voice – the sounds of explosions, the rocking of his ship and bright lights flashing around him.

“Do it. I’m short an engine. Short an engine… short an eng…” Echoing and echoing. “I need help! … need help…” Lord of Kobol, why can’t I wake up? Am I dead? I can’t be!

The Dumb Supper

 The Dumb Supper

The table was set and the candles lit in preparation for a romantic meal. Music played softly from speakers hidden in the very walls as the smell of charred steak and seafood wafted through the apartment. The cook, a woman of modest skills when it came to the culinary arts, placed the carefully charred meat on a platter and set it to one side, turning her attention back to the trio of skewers arranged on the grill. Seasoned and basted with a sweet and sour glaze, she removed it when the color turned just right. The vegetables and rice were the last to be added to the plate before she shut off the food prep unit and dimmed the lights.

Third Meal was ready.

The woman herself was dressed in an elegant gown with layer upon layer of diaphanous purple multi-hue material that made her appear to float rather than walk as she brought the single plate to the table and placed before a holograph of a handsome young man in the prime of his life. The dark blue of the uniform he wore enhanced his already bright blue eyes and contrasted sharply with his yellow blond hair. His smile, warm and genuine, only served to make him even more handsome. The woman paused, the fingers of one hand lightly caressing the frame before reaching out to retrieve a bottle from the bucket of ice on a nearby side table. She filled each glass way with a dark red wine, the bottle’s label marking its origins as being that of the planet Taura.

Setting the bottle back in the bucket, the woman padded on bare feet to her seat. Shoes were not necessary for the event and, truth be told, she was unaccustomed to the fashionable high heels worn by Colonial women.  She didn’t sit though. Instead, she turned once more to the side table and picked up the censor that rested near the wine bucket. Stepping away from the table she went only far enough to the small pedestal where a single candle sat in the direction she had earlier marked out as being east. Raising the censor, she intoned an ancient Sagittaran litany before lighting the candle. She proceeded to another candle on another pedestal; this time located in the direction of south and repeated the action. This she did for the directions of west and north, circling the dining table before returning to the east once more. Replacing the censor, she returned to the table now located in the very center of the circle and took her seat.

One more litany, this one different than previously spoken and the woman breathed in deeply, then exhaled. An almost tangible calmness spread over her before she looked at her own table setting.

Two hypo-sprays lay next to her empty plate, each clearly marked as to their contents. Both were legal and non-lethal drugs. Both could save her life if it came right down to it. Both were also very necessary on a night like this. She cast a look of disdain at them, inwardly cursing herself for being so weak. She had tried on more than one occasion to be strong as she knew she should, but old wounds ran too deep to suppress for long. There was a certain amount of decorum expected of her in the days after The Betrayal, however in a situation like this she knew she could not live up to everyone’s expectations.

Raising her own glass, she looked the man in the photograph in the eye and saluted him with the rim.

“Happy natal day, My Love.”

No sooner had the words left her lips then tears poured uncontrollably from her eyes like dams bursting after an exceedingly heavy spring rainfall. She reached for the napkin beside her own plate and dabbed at the streams that felt like molten metal on her cheeks. Her voice, a harsh whisper now, choked with emotion and her eyes stung painfully.

“I said I wasn’t going to do this.”

Her voice, suddenly octaves higher than usual, strained trying valiantly to keep her from exclaiming too loud. She had lied to herself. Told herself she could get through one event, one remembrance meal, without tearing up. All those hopes for just one damned dignified, unemotional meal went right down the turbo-flush!

“I still love you and I miss you so!”

Her heart broke once more like a broken vase put back together one too many times with repair bond insufficient to hold the overwhelming heartache that had all but shattered her two yahrens ago.

“I’m sorry… so sorry…”

Her apology to thin air went unanswered as she buried her face in the cloth napkin in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably.

Long centons passed before she cried herself out sufficiently to raise her head. The man still looked out from the holo with a smile that could warm a dark, cold mid-winter’s night. In her eyes and in her heart he could do no wrong.

Except die.

Against his will, he had left her and his mortal coil two yahrens ago when his ship had joined the Fifth Fleet embarking on a mission to Molokai where they had met their end at the hands of their scaly enemy and their metallic drone-soldiers.

That was the day Madness took her in its cold embrace and claimed her, mind, body and soul. While there were some doubts of her returning to duty, four months later she was suiting up in uniform and moving back into her old life and newly renovated execs quarters aboard the Star of Kobol. Her shipboard home that she had all but destroyed with projectiles, booze and blaster fire. She spent little more than three days in a drunken stupor, venting her rage by destroying everything at hand in blind painful hysteria.  When they finally cut through the bulkhead wall from the adjoining storage room, they found the woman on the floor of her quarters unconscious and laying in the middle of debris that couldn’t have been any better described as being that of a bomb having gone off inside. The woman was covered in her own blood, though not dying from any self inflicted wounds. These superficial yet productive wounds were the result of flying glass bouncing back at her. A blaster had been found under the desk, apparently sliding there during the tempest with power cells depleted. Evidence of the discharges had been found on the door and the locking panel of the quarters. It was left to logic that she had inadvertently locked herself inside. While this had not been a bad thing n that she could not leave, no one could get in to help her, either.

Emotionally spent for the time being. The woman straightened herself up and looked at the holo.

“Now where were we?”

She paused. Oh yes. The wine. Picking up the glass again she repeated the salute.

“Happy natal day, My Love.”

Yes, that went better. No emotional upheaval followed. She took a sip and the dark, tart liquid flowed down her throat.

(To be continued...)

Medical Log. Battle Dreadnaught LORDS of KOBOL

 Startime: Unknown

Chief Medical Officer Ajilon Battledreadnought LORDS of KOBOL

Two months ago we set out from the Colonies on a top secret mission. To intercept the Cylon's new war machine and destroy it. What the Commander did not tell us was the Cylons knew we were coming.

Hades, I don't think HE knew the Cylons knew we were coming.

I wasn't CMO then. Just a ranking doctor. Doctor Kravet was in charge and he was one of the toughest old birds I'd ever worked for. He made all my medical school nightmares look like a picnic. That egotistical old demon just had to go and kick it during the attack, though and guess who was put in charge of Life Station. That's right. Me.

Enough of that for now. What I really need to do is get down what I remember of the initial attack while I can. What little of my staff that survived has been working round the clock for a secton now tending the wounded and making sure our troops planet side are cared for.

We engaged the Cylons Supertop Warship and got the pogies kicked out of us. At least we were able to give as well as we got. Still, the LORDS is drifting in space with only half an engine and what energy's left is being diverted to keeping this massive hunk of nearly useless debris out of the planet's gravitational pull. What we can spare is powering life support. All non-essential personnel have been evacuated to Royous 4. Yes, that's the planet. Barely bigger than one of Caprica’s moons, it's not inhabited by anything more dangerous than the Warriors themselves and what remaining Cylons that actually made it out of the danger zone virtually unscathed. Most of my staff and I are staying on board because that's where the medical tech is. I have patients here who cannot be moved, including our commander. The bridge took a direct hit and Commander Jove took a massive blow to the head. The swelling has decreased, but I'm still keeping him in a coma until the swelling subsides. At this rate he may die before that happens, but I'm not pulling the plug just yet. While he lives there is still hope and that is all that the crew has right now. Communications are out and we have no way to contact the Colonies much less the planet below. From what I'm told, we split the Cylon Supertop in half and part of it is slowly drifting towards the planet. The Colonel is torn between decisions. Let it enter Royous' atmosphere and what is left can hit the planet's surface, or try and guide both halves towards this system's sun. A survey team is trying to figure out what the extent of the damage will be to the planet if we do allow the Cylon ship to hit. I'm thinking worst case scenario the ship will render the planet uninhabitable forcing an evacuation back to the LORDS where we will eventually all die from lack of food and water. We could try and blast the remnants to bits, but that would use up ammunition that we may need later if the Cylons come looking for their ship. Either way we're pretty well fracked at this point.

Great. New wounded. This entry will have to end here for the time being.

I really could use a drink.
